Reduce energy wastage through a change in light fittings

The British Council for Offices (BCO) has recently discovered that businesses that can save over a third on electricity usage simply by adjusting their lighting.

A mere swap from a T8 light fitting to a T5 fitting will instantly reduce energy usage by 35 percent, according to Paul Edwards, chair of the BCO's Environmental Sustainability Group and head of sustainability at Hammerson.

Edwards notes that behavioural change plays a significant part in reducing electricity wastage and suggests that a motion detecting light installation would be the most cost-effective way to combat this issue.

Businesses that would do well to liaise with building owners over methods to reduce energy wastage. Perhaps they should follow in the steps of office workers in Greater Manchester who are part of a trial entitling them to payment by Electricity North West in return for decreasing their energy costs.
