Walmart searches for office space in London’s West End
Walmart, America’s largest employer and retailer have hired Cushman & Wakeman to search for new office space in London.
The supermarket giant who also own Asda, first entered Eurpoe in 1997 before buying the German hypermarket chain, Werkauft. However, the move was not so profitable resulting in Werkauft being sold again 9 years later.
Mike Duke commented in the Independent on Sunday that Walmart sales in US stores have actually declined by 1.1% in the last quarter and sales in Asda stores have only risen by 0.1% in the last year. International sales however have increased by a whopping 11.5%.
It has been suggested that Walmart are looking for office space in the West End to house around 35-55 people. West London has for a long time been a popular area for businesses looking for a base for their UK head quarters, such as US chain Starbucks who are based in Chiswick, West London.
About Walmart
Their motto is ‘Save Money. Live Better’ but at what cost?
Walmart already owns 4, 500 supermarkets in 15 different countries and is one of the world’s largest retailers. However, the company’s business practices have been greatly criticised over the years.
Unfortunately, Walmart is not a corporation concerned with ethical practice. They’ve hit headlines for violating air pollution regulations in 11 states in the US, paying workers low wages and devastating local communities and businesses.
“Walmart Watch seeks to hold Walmart fully accountable for its impact on communities, the American workforce, the retail sector, the environment and the nation’s economy. Walmart Watch exists to challenge Walmart to more fully embrace its corporate responsibilities and live up to its position as the largest corporation in the United States.”
