Kanata is a suburb in Ottawa, Eastern Ontario. Located about 22 km (17 miles) southwest of downtown Ottawa, it borders the Ottawa River. Kanata has a growing population of over a hundred thousand inhabitants, making it one of the largest communities of Canada’s capital. The area used to be a city in its own right, but it merged with Ottawa in the beginning of the twenty-first century.
Kanata is home to many hi-tech companies. The Canadian airline First Air, has its headquarters in the suburb. There are many companies residing in the area’s North Business Park, including Alcatel, Dell, AMD, Cisco, Brookstreet Resort Hotel, and the luxury Marshes Golf Club. The centre of the suburb is the location of a major shopping area called Kanata Entertainment Centrum. Terry Fox Business Park and the South Business Park accommodate Scotiabank Place, stores such as Home Depot and Staples, as well as many high-tech companies. Reaching the city by plane can be done through Ottawa International Airport. Another option is the Carp Airport situated 30 km (19 miles) away and serving many American and international flights. By car, the suburb is approachable through Highway 417, connecting it with the rest of Ottawa. Getting around Kanata is possible also by bus, as the OC Transpo public service runs in the area. The area has many bike paths, allowing visitors to go walking, jogging, or cycling.
