As the second largest city and municipality in Finland, Espoo is part of the Capital region. The city is on the shore of the Gulf of Finland, in the region of Uusimaa. Most of its population lives within the inner urban core of Helsinki metropolitan area. Espoo shares its eastern border with the municipalities of Helsinki and Vantaa, and encloses Kauniainen. Espoo is the only municipality in Finland to fully enclose another municipality. The city of Espoo is officially bilingual. The majority of the population speaks Finnish as their mother tongue, while a minority speaks Swedish. About ten percent of Espoo’s population has a first language other than Finnish or Swedish.

Aalto University is based in Otaniemi, Espoo. This supports a thriving science community that includes numerous startups and organisations such as VTT – the Technical Research Center of Finland. Espoo is served by Helsinki commuter trains and the Finnish National Rail lines. It also has a regional bus service connecting several of the smaller areas in the region. Espoo is connected to Helsinki via route 1 and 51.
