The official name of this country is the Lebanese Republic. It is located in the East Mediterranean, and is bordered by Syria and Israel. The capital and largest city of Lebanon is Beirut. Situated on the Mediterranean Sea, at the crossroads of Asia, Africa and Europe, Lebanon has a complex and colourful history that includes major outposts from the Phoenician and Roman times. During the first century BC, the Békaa Valley in Lebanon provided most of the grain for Rome. Lebanon is historically one of the oldest sites for wine production. It continues to produce award-winning wines that are exported throughout the world. If you have any interest in wine, then one activity that is an absolute must do when you visit is Wine Tasting. Some of the countries wine producers are Chateau Musar, Chateau Ksara, Chateau Kefraya, and Domaine Wardy. In Beirut you can visit the pre-Roman historic site of Baalbek. These large, famous Roman ruins are a must see. For a different perspective you can snorkel and dive among submerged Phoenician ruins in the coastal cities of Saida (Sidon) and Jbail (Byblos). Lebanon’s cuisine includes a wide selection of vegetarian dishes such as tabouleh, fattoush, and warak anab. Make sure to try the Lebanese barbeque dishes that include shish tawouk (barbequed chicken), lahm mishwe (barbequed meat), and kafta (barbequed seasoned minced meat).

Transport Information

Beirut International Airport (BEY) serves the country. It is located 5 km (3 miles) south of Beirut’s city centre. You can drive from north to south Lebanon in less than three hours as this is a small country. Although there is no air or rail services operating within Lebanon, extensive buss, minibus and taxi services provide easy and efficient transport options. Frequent bus services leave from Beirut and travel to all of Lebanon’s major towns, including Sour, Zahle and Tripoli. Particular bus services also provide international connections between Beirut and Syria. Service taxis operate similarly to a bus and run on set routes, allowing you to get in and out at any point along their particular route. Hire cars are also available and Lebanon’s extensive highway network provides easy connections to the major cities.
