Stavanger is the fourth largest city in Norway. It is located in the southwest of the country on the Stavanger peninsula and serves as an administrative centre of Rogaland County. Since oil and petroleum products are so important financially to the city, among the courses on offer at the University of Stavanger are doctorates in Petroleum Technology and Offshore Technology.

Business Information

Petroleum production is the most important industry in the area and the biggest employer. The largest oil company is Statoil. The city hosts several domestic and international military installations, among which is NATO’s Joint Warfare Centre. There are many buildings in Stavanger that offer office space to rent in the city.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Due to its maritime climate with cool summers and mild winters, activities in the city vary with each season. In the summer visitors can enjoy hiking and mountain climbing, or go surfing at the sandy Sola beach by the airport. In the winter there is ice-skating on Lake Stokkavannet. Stavanger offers a variety of dining experiences to its visitors and an annual food fair in the summer. High-end options include NB Sørensens, Renaa, Straen Fiskerestaurant, and Try Tango. Stavanger has a vibrant nightlife, with most pubs and bars concentrated around Vågen.

Transport Information

The nearest airport is Stavanger Airport; it operates international and domestic flights and is 14 km (9 miles) from the city centre. Another major airport in the area is Haugesund Airport. Buses and shuttle buses provide connections with downtown Stavanger. The city can be accessed directly from Oslo on the NSB train. Coach operators Lavprisekspressen and Nor-Way Bussekspress provide reliable bus routes to other towns and cities in Norway and there is a regular ferry service from Bergen. Stavanger has a good public transportation system with buses and trains, connecting the centre with the outer parts of the city and surrounding towns. There is also taxi service.
