Entertainment And Dining Out

Things to see and do in Russia should always include the Bolshoi Theatre. Located in Moscow, the Bolshoi Theatre holds regular performances of opera, and is home to the world-famous Bolshoi Ballet Company. Catherine Palace sits 25km (15 miles) outside of St Petersburg. This palace was the summer residence for generations of tsars. The palace is best known for being home to the Amber Room – a stunning array of amber panels that were recreated after being looted by the Nazi’s. The cuisine in Russia is very dependant on the region you are in. For the midday and evening meal the food is often more traditional, based on your location. Some form of soup is a common staple of a typical meal. In Moscow, St Petersburg, and many other large cities there are international cuisine and fine dining restaurants readily available. Specialities in the country include Kasha (porridge) is a staple breakfast dish, made with milk and oats, buckwheat or semolina. Other local items include Blini (small pancakes filled with caviar, fish, melted butter or sour cream), Ponchiki (hot sugared doughnuts), Pirozhky (fried rolls with different fillings, usually meat, Borshct (a beetroot soup served hot with sour cream), and Pelmeni (meat dumplings).

Transport Information

Moscow has three major airports Domodedovo, Vnukovo Airport, and Sheremetyevo Airport. There are over 100 regional airlines in Russia, most of which run services from Moscow to their region. Moscow Domodedovo International Airport is located 42km (26 miles) south of central Moscow. Public transport in the cities is comprehensive and inexpensive. The services include metro, tramway, and trolleybus. The railway is a vital part of the Russia’s infrastructure and is easily used.
