Zug is the capital of the Canton of Zug. It is situated within view of the mountains of the Bernese Oberland, and the Rigi Mountain which is also called the Queen of the Mountains. The old town part of Zug is right on the edges of Lake Zug. The town got its name from a term used in the Middle Ages which referred to the right to fish and use fishing nets. Visitors can watch the sunset over the lake with breathtaking views of the mountains.

Business Information

In addition to being a beautiful city and an appealing place to take up residence, Zug is also a busy centre of commerce. In the larger canton of Zug there are more than 30,000 companies including Siemens Building Technologies, Roche Group, V-Zug AG, Cooperative Migros Luzern, Johnson & Johnson, Glencore, Biogen, Transocean, and IMC Trading BV. After the 2nd World War, Zug revised the tax law to make Zug an attractive destination for companies to have office space.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Zug provides many interesting and historical sites for visitors to enjoy. The parish church of St. Oswald from the 15th century is a fascinating building to visit. The church is dedicated to the King of Northumbria, St. Oswald. Also in the old town is the town hall, which was built in the 15th century and is currently a museum. To see archaeological relics from the Bronze Age and specifically the Zug-Sumpf settlement, be sure to visit the Museum of Prehistory Zug. Zug offers choices for both casual and fine dining. The Restaurant Baren near the train station is housed in a centuries old building with lots of ambiance. The food is excellent and priced modestly. The Restaurant Freimann is slightly out of the city of Zug in a rural farm setting. The food is traditional Swiss and the rustic charm of the setting adds to the appeal.

Transport Information

The Zurich Airport is within 45 minutes of Zug by car or train. There is direct train service to and from the Airport 70 times per day. The convenient Zug railway station provides easy access to a variety of locations across Switzerland and is served by the Swiss Federal Railway. The city is located on the 4a, a side section of the M4, which directly links to Zurich in the north and Brunnen in the south.
