Leyton is an area of east London that lies within the borough of Waltham Forest and around five miles north east of central London. The district takes its name from its position as a town or settlement close to the River Lea, which still marks it western boundary. Evidence of Roman development in Leyton has been found and since Anglo-Saxon times the town was considered part of the English county of Middlesex, until it officially became part of Greater London in the 1960s. Leyton incorporates part of the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, which famously staged the Summer Olympic Games in 2012, and is home to the popular east London football club Leyton Orient FC. Leyton is distinct from Leytonstone, another district of east London that lies immediately north east of Leyton. Both areas lie close to Wanstead Flats, an expansive area of open space and parkland that is the southernmost reach of Epping Forest, an ancient woodland still managed by the City of London Corporation.

Setting up your business here

As a potential business location, Leyton benefits from its position within close proximity to central London, particularly the City, Canary Wharf and the thriving technology start-up hubs of the areas around Old Street. Businesses with offices in Leyton include AT & M Accountants, NR Legal Solicitors and the web design firms Boastie Media and Wapo Design. Both the London Underground and Overground rail services have stations in the district, with lines running directly to central and north London respectively.

Things to do in Leyton

Leyton is a lively and vibrant district within Waltham Forest, which boasts a broad variety of attractions and areas of considerable beauty, cultural significance and historic interest. One unique site in Leyton is the New Spitalfields Market, which is regarded as being the preeminent horticultural marketplace in the UK, with exotic fruits and vegetables a particular speciality. Leyton also lies adjacent to the eastern portion of Hackney Marshes, an area of public space used for all manner of activities within the local community. Great places to eat out in and around Leyton include Oceano Restaurant, the Cyprus Meze, which offers a party atmosphere and some excellent Mediterranean cuisine, and Leytonstone Spice, where they serve some of the best Indian food around. The area is also well-served when it comes to quality pubs, with the King Harold, the Plough and Harrow and the Coach & Horses all well worth looking out for and paying a visit.
