Preston sits in the North West of the UK and is the leading economic centre for the English county of Lancashire. With its roots reaching back well over a millennium, Preston became an important hub for textile manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution and the 18th and 19th centuries. The city is the administrative centre of Lancashire and lies on the north bank of the River Ribble, which runs west from Yorkshire and into the Irish Sea. There are numerous areas of natural beauty and interest close to Preston, not least the Ribble Estuary National Nature Reserve or the Forest of Bowland. Nearby towns include Blackburn and Burnley, while Liverpool and Manchester are all just a little further away to the south-west and south-east respectively. Central Preston is bisected by the River Ribble to the south and by the Ringway, a major road route leading in and out of the city.
