Preston sits in the North West of the UK and is the leading economic centre for the English county of Lancashire. With its roots reaching back well over a millennium, Preston became an important hub for textile manufacturing during the Industrial Revolution and the 18th and 19th centuries. The city is the administrative centre of Lancashire and lies on the north bank of the River Ribble, which runs west from Yorkshire and into the Irish Sea. There are numerous areas of natural beauty and interest close to Preston, not least the Ribble Estuary National Nature Reserve or the Forest of Bowland. Nearby towns include Blackburn and Burnley, while Liverpool and Manchester are all just a little further away to the south-west and south-east respectively. Central Preston is bisected by the River Ribble to the south and by the Ringway, a major road route leading in and out of the city.

Setting up your business here

Preston has the largest economy in Lancashire and benefits from being within commutable distance of the two major regional cities of Liverpool and Manchester. The fashion retailer Matalan was founded in Preston and is now headquartered just outside the city. There are numerous recruitment companies, advertising agencies, accountancy firms and IT consultancy businesses with bases in the city. Enterprise activity in the city is supported in part by the University of Central Lancashire, which has high calibre departments focussed on work within a variety of scientific and creative arts disciplines.

Things to do in Preston

Among the best places to visit near Preston is Hoghton Tower, a fortified manor house open to the public that offers amazing views of the surrounding areas and a great deal of insight into local history over the past millennia or so. Elsewhere, nearby you’ll find another incredibly historic manor in Samlesbury Hall, which was built during medieval times and now welcomes around 50,000 visitors on an annual basis. Other local attractions well worth a visit include the Museum of Lancashire, the Harris Museum and the Church of St Walburge, a very prominent local landmark. The city is also home to a healthy variety of quality restaurants, among the best of which are Heathcotes Brasserie, the Fusion Room on Friargate and the Olive Press on Winkley Square. For lively bars in the city centre, head for Glover Street and Church Street and look out for Revolution, the Wellington Inn, Baluga and Lava & Ignite.
