The Loop or Chicago Loop is one of 77 officially designated community areas located in the city of Chicago, Illinois, in the United States. It is the historic commercial center of Downtown Chicago and the historic theater and shopping district for the city. Chicago’s central business district community area is bordered by the Chicago River, Lake Michigan, and Roosevelt Road. One of the largest art museums in the United States, the Art Institute of Chicago is located in the Chicago Loop, as are the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, the Lyric Opera of Chicago, the Goodman Theatre, the Joffrey Ballet, the central public Harold Washington Library, and the Chicago Cultural Center. Much of Chicago’s nightlife is also centered in the loop. There are Irish pubs, sports bars, and a great variety of night clubs.

Business Information

The Chicago Loop is the second largest commercial business district in the United States, coming in second to New York City’s Midtown Manhattan. The financial district near LaSalle Street is home to the CME Group’s Chicago Board of Trade and Chicago Mercantile Exchange. Companies with headquarters or office space in the Chicago Loop include Chase Bank, United Airlines, Blue Cross and Blue Shield, Morton Salt, Boeing, Motorola, Caterpillar, and Kraft Foods.

Entertainment And Dining Out

The Art Institute of Chicago is one of the premier museums in the United States. Here you will find the world’s best collection of Impressionist painting outside of France, a large selection of early 20th-century painting, architecture, and photography, as well as archaeological finds covering 5,000 years of art and cultural history. You can eat lunch in the food court at Ogilvie/Northwester Station, or try the Artist’s Café, which offers some of the best outdoor seating in downtown Chicago. It is located in the old Fine Arts Building.
