It is located in the south-western edge of Cook County, 20 miles (32 km) from downtown Chicago. Chicago Ridge got its name from the ridges that are left behind when trainloads of dirt were brought out to the countryside and piled up by the Wabash Railroad during construction of the Columbian Exposition of 1893. Stony Creek winds through the village. This creek is actually a remnant of a feeder canal build by settlers in the 1840s, for the Illinois and Michigan Canal.
