Westchester is a county in New York State. It is situated in the New York metro area, to the immediate north of the New York City borough of the Bronx. Westchester covers an area of 450 square miles and is made up of six cities, 19 towns, and 20 villages. Any land area in the county that is not contained in one of the cities is in a town. A town may have zero, one or multiple villages. A village can be located in more than one town, as two of Westchester’s villages are. Westchester was named after the city of Chester in England. The county seat for Westchester is White Plains.

Business Information

A number of Westchester’s villages and towns serve as bedroom communities for commuters to New York City. Westchester is also a great area for business. PepsiCo, IBM, MasterCard, Reader’s Digest and other prominent corporations have their headquarters in the county. Most of the villages and towns also have thriving commercial shops, restaurants, and service firms such as heating and air conditioning companies. There are many areas in each of the villages and towns that have office space available.

Entertainment And Dining Out

Westchester County offers a wide variety of cuisines and restaurants. It is traditionally known for its Italian-American food found in restaurants, pizzerias, and diners. Bagels and other foods associated with New York are also widely available. There are also a large number of farmers markets and farm stands available where you can get your own fresh ingredients. Each town or village has unique offerings for entertainment, whether you are looking for nightlife, outdoor activities, or cultural offerings.

Transport Information

The options available to those wishing to reach Westchester by air are as follows: • Westchester County Airport, is the largest airport in the lower Hudson Valley, other than the New York City/New Jersey airports. • Newark Liberty International Airport, in New Jersey. • John F. Kennedy International Airport. • LaGuardia Airport. Train services are also abundant with the following choice available: • Amtrak has trains that make stops at Yonkers and Croton-on-Hudson and in New Rochelle. • Metro-North Railroad has three branches of Metro-North Commuter Railroad that serve the county, all from Grand Central Terminal. The Hudson Line travels the far west flank of the county along the bank of the river. The Harlem line drives up the middle, and the New Haven line follows the shore of Long Island Sound. • New York City Subway goes to the southern edge of Westchester at which point you can take a bus to other areas.
