This major east-west route connects the downtown area to locations east and north of the city. This avenue is also US Route 50. Gallaudet University is on New York Avenue. This is a federally chartered university for the education of the deaf and hard of hearing.

New York Avenue is easily accessed via the Metrobus route P6, which runs between Rhode Island Avenue Station and Anacostia Station. The Avenue starts at the intersection with 15th Street NW and connects with John Hanson Highway at the northeastern end.
