Parkes is one of Canberra’s inner suburbs, in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is located 4 km (2 miles) from the centre of the capital city. In its boundaries you will find the Parliamentary Triangle and many of the large institutions of Canberra. The suburb is named after the politician Sir Henry Parkes, while its streets have the names of monarchs and other constitutional references. Due to the non-residential character of the area, the population of Parkes is relatively small for its size.
With the Parliamentary Triangle located in Parkes, the chief employer in the suburb is state administration. In addition, the national institutions are catered to by several dining and recreational facilities, such as Café in the House near the Old Parliament House and Waters Edge in Commonwealth Place. Canberra’s economy is largely based on government administration and defence. The Australian Defence Force and HMAS Harman - a naval communications centre, are both headquartered in Canberra. There are many locations for office space in Parkes.
The most significant landmarks in Parkes are the Parliament House and the Old Parliament house. There are a number of other sights including the National Rose Garden, the Aboriginal Tent Embassy, the Commonwealth Place, the Reconciliation Place, and the National Archives. Parkes has also several park territories, such as the Commonwealth Park and Kings Park. Lake Burley Griffin offers many outdoor options include the ability to hire a paddle boat, canoe, or kayak. Parkes has a variety of restaurants offering diverse cuisine options. The Kitchen Cabinet and The Ginger Room both serve modern Australian dishes whereas Waters Edge has a distinctly European menu and offers scenic views.
Getting to Kingston by plane is quite easy, as Canberra International Airport is 7 km (4 miles) away. The suburb is serviced by ACTION buses, providing reliable links to the rest of Canberra. Parkes Way and Commonwealth Avenue are the two major roads that give drivers an instant connection to the highway system.
