Turner is a suburb of Canberra, in the Australian state of New South Wales. It is located 2 km (1 mile) from the centre of the capital city. The population of the suburb is just over three thousand inhabitants. Its name comes from the politician Sir George Turner and its streets are named after legislators, writers, and pioneers. Neighbouring suburbs include Acton, O’Connor, and Dickson. Turner is close to the Australian National University.
The main economic sector in Turner is Central Government Administration, followed by education, defence, legal and accountancy services, as well as computer system design. Canberra features an economy largely based on government administration and defence. The Australian Defence Force and HMAS Harman - a naval communications centre, are both headquartered in Canberra. There are also private sector contributions to the economy that include independent software vendors, such as Tower Software and Rule Burst. There are many locations in and around Turner for serviced offices.
Turner is within walking distance from the City and is close to the local O’Connor shops and the Australian National University. The suburb houses the Special-Education and Mainstream Public school. There is a high concentration of parks and open spaces in the area, including half of Haig Park and several sport ovals. Nearby Lake Burley Griffin offers many outdoor activities that include the ability to walk, cycle or skate around the lake, which is approximately 25 km (16 miles) in circumference. You can also hire a paddle boat, canoe, or kayak, or take a scenic cruise of the lake.
