Libya is a country in North Africa. It is bordered by the Mediterranean Sea, Egypt, Sudan, Chad, Niger, Algeria, and Tunisia. Situated in the Maghreb region of the continent, Libya is the 17th largest country in the world. The largest city and capital in Libya is Tripoli. During the Roman Empire, the city of Leptis Magna also called Lpqy, Neapolis, Lebida or Lebda, was a prominent fixture. The ruins of this city can be seen in Al Khums, Libya, located 130 km (81 miles) east of Tripoli. This unspoiled and spectacular site offers one of the best chances to see Roman ruins in the Mediterranean. Other great ruins include Cyrene (Shahhat), which was an ancient Greek colony founded in 630 BC. Situated near the village of present-day Shahhat, this is the site of the oldest ‘love Symbol’ in the world. In the city of Tripoli you will find many restaurants serving western-style cuisine, along with several Moroccan and Lebanese restaurants. There are also many Turkish and Italian restaurants in the city. Restaurants in Tripoli include Al-Morgan – a seafood restaurant, and Al-Sakhra – featuring a rustic vibe, excellent food, and live entertainment.

Transport Information

The Tripoli International Airport is Libya’s largest airport. It is located in the town of Ben Ghashir 34 km (21 miles) south of Tripoli’s city centre. There are no rail networks operating in Libya, but there are a large number of other transport options. There are ferries connecting the Libyan city of Tripoli with Malta and Sfax, Tunisia. Long distance buses operate services between Egypt and Benghazi. Buses also run between Tunis, Tunisia and Tripoli. Within Libya, taxi and bus services provide efficient inter-city connections. Libya has an extensive network of major roads and highways making the country’s cities and towns accessible via car. A major highway runs along the coast linking Tripoli with Al-Khums, Zliton, Sirte and Benghazi.
