A city in the Netherlands, Maastricht is located in the southern portion of the Dutch province of Limburg. Maastricht is also the capital of Limburg. This is the southernmost city in the Netherlands. It is within walking distance of Belgium, and is close enough to ride a bike to the neighbouring country of Germany. It shares the claim with Nijmegen to be the oldest city in the Netherlands. Maastricht originated as a Roman settlement. The Maastricht Treaty is what developed into the European Union, European citizenship, and the euro – a single currency for participating European countries. This popular town has a large international student population, many old homes and buildings, cathedrals, and a cobblestoned town centre.

The nearest major airport is Maastricht Aachen Airport. This airport has international flights and is 14 km (9 miles) from the town centre. Another major airport near Maastricht is Liège Airport, which has international flights from Liege, Belgium and is 43 km (27 miles) from the city in the Netherlands. Maastricht is well served by train, motorways and bus service. Most of the city centre is pedestrian-only so walking is a great way to get around. The city has a bus system called the Stadsbus that travels over most of the city and surrounding areas. This is also a very bike-friendly town.
