Agno is a small city which is part of the Lugano district in the Malcantone Valley, in Switzerland. Located in the rolling hills outside of Lugano, the area has a quiet and lovely landscape. Within the city limits of Agno are the villages of Cassina, Serocca, and Mondonico. The canton is Ticino. The area was originally a market town as far back as Roman times.
The workforce of Agno is made up of approximately 1,855 employed residents. One of the main employers is Mikron Tool SA Agno, which manufactures a variety of cutting tools. The company is a subsidiary of the larger Mikron Holding AG. The area is famous for producing chestnuts which have been grown in the area for centuries. There are options for office space in Agno.
Agno does not get a lot of tourist or visitor traffic. Most of the tourist traffic is to the regional airport, which is located approximately 4 km (2 miles) outside of Lugano and within the village of Agno. In the area surrounding Agno are small villages with quaint stone homes and ancient churches. It is a great place for biking and hiking and there are nearby trails such as the Sentiero delle meraviglie in Malcantone which wanders by forgers, ore mines, and castle ruins. In terms of restaurants, Agno, Switzerland can boast one of the named top ten restaurants in Europe, the Grotto Riviera. The restaurant has excellent cuisine and service and the price is reasonable. Another fine restaurant is the Italian Ristorante Grotto da Guiliano which specializes in fresh local cuisine.
The most important building in Agno is the Lugano – Agno Airport. Visitors to Agno have just a ten minute walk to the village. There is regular transportation to Lugano via a shuttle bus. Within the municipality of Agno, there is railway station which departs every fifteen minutes during the week and every half hour on weekends. The train station is called the Lugano-Ponte Tresa Railway Station. A bus service is also available from Aranno and Cademario Casa di Cura. The city is located on the edge of the A2 motorway, which offers a direct connection to Lucerne and Basel in the north. Following this route south, travellers from Agno can head through Mendrisio and to the Italian border.
