There are two shopping centres in the city centre, the Clarendon Centre and the Westgate Centre which is soon to be redeveloped. For lovers of history, the Ashmolean Museum of Art and Archaeology was the world s first university museum, and was built in 1678. The Bodleian Library is another historic landmark linked to the university and the impressive Christ Church Cathedral is a popular destination for visitors. Oxford is a favoured destination for evening entertainment, with the Sheldonian Theatre and the New Theatre showing many famous plays. The picturesque waterfront is a great spot for a light lunch or evening meal. The Waterfront Café is open all day, and the Quod Brasserie provides sumptuous evening meals with the option for private dining and corporate events. There are several bars ideal for an after-work drink, and the Jericho Tavern is a popular choice with the locals. Leisurely weekends in Oxford can be spent sightseeing and walking in the scenic local countryside, taking a cruise on the Thames or a tour of the university buildings.
