Distrito Federal, or Federal District, is the federal administrative district for the country of Mexico. It is roughly situated in Mexico City. However, the expanded metropolitan area of Mexico City is outside the districts boundaries. The Distrito Federal is bordered by the states of México and Morelos. This is the country’s economic and cultural hub, as well as home to the offices of the federal government.

Within Distrito Federal are the headquarters and offices for all of the federal executive, legislative, and judicial branches of the Mexican government. The countries main exports are automobiles, electronics, televisions, computers, mobile phones, LCD displays, oil, silver, fruits, vegetables, coffee, and cotton. Pemex is the largest company in Mexico, and is responsible for administering research, exploration and sales of oil in the country. There are many things to see and do in Distrito Federal. The area’s landmarks include Plaza de la Constitución or Zócalo, located in the Centro Historico. This is one of the largest squares in the world, surrounded by historic buildings, including the City Hall and the Cathedral. Angel de la Independencia is a monument celebrating Mexico gaining independence in 1810. Coyoacán is a historic Colonial Arts district of the city. This was home to artists such as Frida Kahlo, Leon Trotsky, and Diego Rivera. Dining options in Distrito Federal include El Cardenal, Hacienda de los Morales, San Angel Inn, Café de Tacuba, St Regis Mexico City, La Casa de las Sirenas, and La Opera.

Transport Information

Benito Juarez International Airport serves Distrito Federal. There is a bus and light rail system connection the airport’s two terminals and service to the city is available by taxi, metro, and bus. Another option in the area is Licenciado Adolfo López Mateos International Airport located in the City of Toluca, 50 km (31 miles) southwest of Mexico City. Mexico City has several public transport options including underground metro, RTP bus system, electric trolley buses, and taxi.
