A city in Bavaria, Regensburg is located where the Danube and Regen Rivers meet. The Bavarian Forest is east of Regensburg. The large, medieval centre of this city is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Founded in 279 A.D., Regensburg is one of Germany’s oldest towns. The preserved medieval city centre is one of the main attractions of Regensburg, Germany. A few of the highlights in this medieval centre are the Cathedral of St. Peter and the Steinerne Brücke. This area offers incredible outdoor cafes in the summer and some truly unique Italian-style medieval merchant houses and towers. This centre is situated next to the Danube River. For dining, the ‘Wurstkuchl’ is situated at the stone bridge. This is reputed to be the oldest fast food restaurant in the world. It was founded over 500 years ago and offers a small beer garden set right on the river bank. The restaurant waiters dress in medieval outfits and serve sausage and Bavarian specialties such as Kneitinger.
There are two international airports located within 100 km (62 miles) and both airports are linked by public transport systems and motorway connections. The first is Munich, available via Autobahn A92/A9/A93 or by bus 635 from the airport to Freising and train from Freising to Regensburg Hauptbahnhof. The second is Nuremberg Airport; it can be reached via Autobahn A3 or metro U2 to Nuremberg Hauptbahnhof and ICE or Regional Express to Regensburg Hauptbahnhof. Regensburg Hauptbahnhof, the city’s main train station, is located in the city centre and connects to the German rail network by ICE, IC, and EC long-distance trains. This train station has several restaurants, a tourist office, and a travel agency. Being located on the Danube River which leads to Vienna and the Black Sea, Regensburg is also connected to the Rhine via the Main-Danube Canal.
