Las Palmas is the co-capital (with Santa Cruz) and the most populous city in the Autonomous Community of the Canary Islands. This is the ninth largest city in Spain, and the largest city of the European Union that isn’t on the Continent. Las Palmas is situated on the north-eastern side of the Spanish island of Gran Canaria, which sits off the western coast of Africa in the Atlantic Ocean. Las Palmas is a popular tourist destination, valued for its beaches, surfing, and water sports activities.

The economy of Las Palmas is primarily centred on tourism, the construction industry and tropical agriculture. Agricultural products such as bananas and tobacco are exported to Europe and the Americas. Other cultivated resources include tomatoes, potatoes, onions, cochineal, sugarcane, grapes, vines, dates, oranges, lemons, figs, wheat, barley, maize, apricots, peaches and almonds. There are a number of conference centres in the city including The Gran Canaria Conference Hall and office space is often available to rent.

Entertainment And Dining Out

History enthusiasts will find plenty to enjoy on Las Palmas, including the Museo Canario. This museum displays a collection of local archaeological objects, which it exhibits in 16 halls. Casa de Colón or Columbus House is a small museum centred on the Canary Islands history and its relationship with America. The complex is made up of several houses, one of which was used by Christopher Columbus during his first trip to America in 1492. Playa del Confital is famous for its waves which are highly valued by amateur and professional surfers. This beach is believed to have the best waves in Europe and it annually hosts qualifying events for the professional world surfing championship. Dining options in Las Palmas include Hipócrates a vegetarian restaurant located in an old cottage that offers a set menu and al-fresco seating. Dishes such as vegetarian lasagne and seitan kebabs are a mainstay. Another option is Mesón Condado, which serves Galician cuisine and traditional Spanish dishes on a set menu.

Transport Information

Las Palmas is served by the Gran Canaria Airport, often called Las Palmas Airport. The Airport is located in the eastern part of the island, 18 km (11 miles) from the Las Palmas city centre. Public bus services operate within the city and run throughout the island.
