Salamanca is a city and capital of Salamanca Province, located in north-western Spain. It is in the community of Castile and León, 80 km (50 miles) east of the Portuguese border. The City of Salamanca is a World Heritage City. It is home to the oldest university in the country, and offers many incredible monuments that attract tourists.

Business Information

The city’s economy is dependant on the university and tourism. Other economic sectors include agriculture and livestock, along with manufacturing. Two of the largest businesses in the area include veterinary vaccine manufacturer Laboratorios Intervet, and the fertilizer manufacturer S.A. Mirat. Mirat was established in Salamanca in 1812 as a starch factory, making it the city’s oldest industrial company. There are many buildings throughout the region featuring serviced offices.

Entertainment And Dining Out

To get a real feel for the area on of the best things to do is walk around Salamanca, starting at the Plaza Mayor, built in the 18th century. Take a moment to sit at a sidewalk café or bar and have a coffee drink or lunch as you look over the grand square. This is often considered Spain’s prettiest central plaza. When you are feeling refreshed, let your artistic side lead the way through Casa de las Conchas, an art gallery and library. Or visit the Cathedral Viaja, the beginning of one of Europe’s first universities. The signature dish of Salamanca is called Charreria (peasant lands). This is a slow-cooked casserole that includes chickpeas.

Transport Information

Salamanca Airport is located on the military base of Matacán, situated 14 km (9 miles) east of the city. This airport offers regular flights to Barcelona, Paris, and charter flights to Palma de Mallorca and the Canary Islands. Flights and destinations are added in the summer months. There are many useful motorways that can be joined at Salamanca: the A-62 is a fast route to Portugal and onwards to Porto, and the A-50 runs from Salamanca to Madrid.
