Westchester is a county in New York State. It is situated in the New York metro area, to the immediate north of the New York City borough of the Bronx. Westchester covers an area of 450 square miles and is made up of six cities, 19 towns, and 20 villages. Any land area in the county that is not contained in one of the cities is in a town. A town may have zero, one or multiple villages. A village can be located in more than one town, as two of Westchester’s villages are. Westchester was named after the city of Chester in England.
