Sant Cugat del Vallès is a town and municipality situated 20 km (12 miles) north of Barcelona in Catalonia, Spain. Sant Cugat is a bedroom community for Barcelona. It was originally called Castrum Octavianum, the modern name comes from Saint Cucuphas, believed to have been martyred on the site of the towns medieval monastery.
Sant Cugat is an affluent suburb of Barcelona due to its close proximity. The small town features a pedestrian shopping centre, restaurants, a concert venue, a couple of movie theatres, and a large shopping mall.
A Benedictine abbey, the Monastery of Sant Cugat was founded in the 9th century, and was worked on until the 14th century. The monastery’s main feature is the Romanesque cloister. Park Güell began in 1900 with the plan to create a miniature garden city for wealthy homeowners. The idea of homes were abandoned early, but not before a plaza, Hansel and Gretel gatehouses, many steps and walkways were built. Dining options include Casablanca – with rustic charm this restaurant features traditional and international cuisine. One specialty is steak tartar. Heura is another option. This minimalist restaurant offers an open-view kitchen and specialties such as sea urchin gratin.
The nearest major airport to Sant Cugat is Barcelona Airport. This airport has international and domestic flights from Barcelona, Spain and is 24 km (15 miles) from the town centre. Sant Cugat has a train station with a direct metro connection into downtown Barcelona and the nearby industrial cities of Terrassa and Sabadell.
